Why is My OPPO Phone's Screen Black and White

Have you noticed that your OPPO phone screen suddenly turned black and white? This might be because of the *Night shield feature that adjusts the color of the screen to prevent eye strain and reduce the intensity of bright colors. Alternatively, the grayed or black-and-white screen could also indicate a hardware issue. For more information about it below, keep reading. 


Note: Available for ColorOS 6.0 and above devices or devices with Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls. Check your phone's ColorOS version in [Settings] > [About Phone] / [About Device].

  • *The Night shield feature is renamed as Eye comfort in ColorOS 6.1.2 and above. Moreover, the Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls may vary per country/region and phone model. 


OPPO phone screen turned black and white

If your OPPO phone screen turned black and white, please refer to the following troubleshooting below.


Check if Night shield/ Eye comfort is enabled

  • For ColorOS 12 to ColorOS 13 and above: Go to [Settings] > [Display & Brightness] > [Eye comfort] and toggle to turn off [Eye comfort].

  • For ColorOS 6.1.2 to ColorOS 11: Go to [Settings] > [Display & Brightness] > [Eye comfort] and toggle to turn off [Always on]. Or go to [Settings] >  [Display & Brightness] > and turn off [Eye comfort].

  • For ColorOS 6.1 and below: Go to [Settings] > [Display & Brightness] > [Night Shield] and turn off [Night Shield].

Disable grayscale on Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls

  • For ColorOS 13 and above: Go to [Settings] > [Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls] > [Bedtime mode] and tap [Customize] > [Screen options at bedtime] and toggle [Grayscale] to turn off. 

  • For ColorOS 6.1.2 to ColorOS 12.1: Go to [Settings] > [Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls] > [Bedtime mode] and tap *[Customize] > and toggle [Grayscale] option to turn off. 

  • For ColorOS 6.1 and below: Go to [Settings] > [Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls] > [Wind Down]. Enable Wind Down to see the Grayscale option and turn it off.

Note: *The first time you disable the Grayscale option on your OPPO phone through Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls, you need to go to [Settings] > [Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls] > [Bedtime mode] and toggle [Grayscale] to disable it. Please also note that this feature may vary per country/ region and phone model.

Perform Component Check/ Common Problems Detection

  • For ColorOS 12 to ColorOS 13 and above: Go to [Tools] folder > [Phone Manager] > [Tools] > [Diagnostics]. Tap [Diagnostics] and select [Screen] and disable other components. Tap [Run diagnostics] and follow the on-screen instructions to check if your screen works properly.

  • For ColorOS 11: Go to [Tools] folder > [Phone Manager] > [Diagnostics] > [Continue]. Select [Screen] and disable other components. Tap [Run diagnostics] and follow the on-screen instructions to check if your Screen works properly.

  • For ColorOS 7.1 to 7.2: Go to [Tools] folder > [Phone Manager] > [Quick Check] > [Start Check] / [Continue]. Select [Screen] and disable other components. Tap [Check] / [Run diagnostics] and follow the on-screen instructions to check if your Screen works properly.

  • For ColorOS 6.0 to 6.1: Go to [Tools] folder > [Phone Manager] > [Quick Check] / [Component Check] > [Start Check] / [Run Test]. Select [Screen] and disable other components. Tap [Check] / [Start Detection] and follow the on-screen instructions to check if your Screen works properly.
