When NFC Stops Reading Cards on OPPO Devices After the ColorOS 16 Update
What’s Happening?
After updating:
Contactless cards are not recognized by the official Wallet app or third-party transit apps
Attempts to tap at the metro gates or payment terminals may show “NFC error”
The issue is suspected to relate to Host-Card-Emulation (HCE) services or misaligned secure element permissions
Although the device otherwise functions normally, this prevents smooth tap-to-pay interactions.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Before visiting a service center, try the following:
1. Check NFC Settings
Go to Settings > Additional Settings > NFC
Ensure NFC is ON and Tap & Pay is set as the default for your wallet app
2. Clear NFC System Cache
Go to Settings > Apps > Show System Apps > Android System WebView / NFC Service
Clear cache and reboot the device
3. Verify App Permissions
Go to Settings > Security & Privacy > App Permissions > Other Permissions
Ensure your wallet or card-reader app has permission for NFC or Contactless services
4. Check for Software Updates
Go to Settings > System > Software Update
5. Send Feedback if the Issue Persists
Go to Settings > About Phone > Send Feedback
Include: model number, build version, update date, card type, and any error messages
Alternate Wallet App Test
Install a different wallet or card-reader app
If it works, the issue may be with OS wallet integration
If none work, it may indicate hardware or firmware issues
Additional Tips
Avoid using Smart Power Saving during transit — background services like HCE may be restricted
Perform a full recharge with the original charger and cable overnight post-update
Devices with root access or custom boot images may experience NFC issues — revert to stock firmware for full functionality
