What Are IP Ratings in Smartphones and What Do They Protect Against?
🔍 What Is an IP Rating?
An IP rating is a standardised system defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It uses the format IPXY, where:
X = Protection against solid particles like dust or sand
Y = Protection against liquids, such as rain, splashes, or full submersion
💡 The higher the numbers, the greater the level of protection.
| IP Rating | Solid Protection (1st Digit) | Liquid Protection (2nd Digit) |
| IP52 | Limited dust protection | Dripping water (up to 15° angle) |
| IP53 | Limited dust protection | Water spray (up to 60° angle) |
| IP54 | Limited dust protection | Splashing water from any direction |
| IP55 | Dust protected (not fully sealed) | Water jets from any direction |
| IP57 | Dust protected | Immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes |
| IP58 | Dust protected | Continuous immersion (depth may vary) |
| IP65 | Fully dust-tight | Low-pressure water jets |
| IP67 | Fully dust-tight | Immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes |
| IP68 | Fully dust-tight | Continuous immersion (usually >1 meter, lab tested) |
📌 Important Notes About IP Ratings
Lab-tested only: IP ratings are tested under controlled laboratory conditions using clean freshwater.
Not all devices are IP-rated: Some OPPO phones are designed with water-resistant features but may not have an official IP certification.
No saltwater or soapy liquid protection: Exposure to saltwater, pool water, or detergents may cause damage and is typically not covered under warranty.
Avoid charging when wet: Never plug in your phone if it’s wet or has recently been exposed to liquid.
Wear and tear matters: Frequent water exposure can gradually reduce the effectiveness of any water-resistance seal.
