What is OPPO’s Extreme Cold Mode
Extreme Cold Mode is a system-level feature designed to protect your OPPO phone’s battery when charging in extremely low temperatures. When the device is exposed to an environment as cold as –20°C (in windless conditions), the phone automatically switches to Extreme Cold Mode and displays a corresponding prompt on the screen. This mode ensures safe charging by warming the battery to a usable temperature before allowing normal charging to resume.
How Extreme Cold Mode Works
Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to very low temperatures. When exposed to extreme cold, these batteries cannot accept charge efficiently and may experience:
Slow charging
Long-term battery degradation
Reduced lifespan
Risk of charging failure
To counter these issues, OPPO implements an automatic battery-preheating mechanism. The process works as follows:
The system detects that the phone is operating in extremely low temperatures.
Extreme Cold Mode activates automatically—no user action required.
The phone gently warms the battery using internal preheating controls.
Once the battery reaches a safe temperature range, charging begins or gradually returns to normal.
This ensures that charging is safe and stable, even in harsh winter conditions.
Which Models Support Extreme Cold Mode?
OPPO Find Series: OPPO Find X9 Series, OPPO Find X8 Series, OPPO Find X7 series,
OPPO Reno series: OPPO Reno 15 series, OPPO Reno 14 series, OPPO Reno 13 series, OPPO Reno 12 series, OPPO Reno 11 series, OPPO Reno 9
OPPO K Series: OPPO K13 Turbo series, OPPO K12 Plus, OPPO K12, OPPO K11
OPPO A Series: OPPO A6 Pro 5G, OPPO A5 Pro, OPPO A3x
How to Activate Extreme Cold Mode
Extreme Cold Mode cannot be manually turned on or off. It is always enabled by default on supported devices.
It will automatically activate when:
The ambient temperature is around –20°C
The environment is windless
The device is connected to a charger
If all conditions are met, the “Extreme Cold Mode” prompt appears on the charging interface.
Why Charging Is Slower in Extreme Cold Mode
Charging speed is intentionally reduced for safety.
Before the battery can begin normal charging, the system must first warm it to a safe operating temperature. During this preheating stage:
Charging current is limited
The charging process may feel noticeably slower
The device may take longer than usual to reach higher battery percentages
Once the battery temperature stabilizes, charging efficiency improves automatically.
