Know the Difference: Waterproof vs Water-resistant

You're someone who loves swimming and taking underwater photos?
You want to know if your phone is waterproof or water-resistant?
But first, what’s the difference?

Applicable to: All OPPO Smartphones.

Water-resistant is the lowest level of water protection. A device labeled as water-resistant means that the device itself may be built in such a way that it is more difficult for water to get inside of it, giving it the ability to withstand light dripping or splashing.

Waterproof means that it’s impermeable to water, no matter how much time it spends in the water. This means no water will pass through it.

What are those digits after IP?

Using the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 60529) standard, the first digit after IP is the rating for its resistance to solids and the second digit is for water resistance.

So which one is the most resistant?

Simple – the higher the number, the better the resistance.

For example, for a device with an IP68 rating, it’s six (6) – means no “harmful” dust or dirt seeped into the unit after being in direct contact with the matter, while seven (8), means the device can be submerged in more than one meter of freshwater for half an hour.

Note: The IP68 rating means that the product has passed the test under the following conditions: (1) immersed in still fresh water with a depth of 1.5 meters; (2) tested for 30 minutes; (3) no more than 5°C of difference between the water temperature and product temperature.

Disclaimers:

1. Splash, water, and dust resistance may decrease as a result of normal wear.
2. Please don’t charge the mobile phone when it is in damp conditions.

3. Damage caused by liquid immersion is not covered by the warranty. Please refer to the User Manual for the cleaning and drying instructions.

4. To be safe, always check your device's IP rating before using it on water.

5. The IEC rating is strictly for freshwater. It doesn't guarantee protection from submersion to other liquids like saltwater, beer, coffee, soda, and others.
