Is iSIM the Future for Mobile IoT?

Despite the universality and usefulness of physical SIM cards, their design poses major limitations to users—space-consuming, less durable, and risk of theft.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) market evolves, these physical constraint becomes more difficult and expensive to accommodate. Hence, eSIM and iSIM technology is a necessary evolution that offers a flexible and less expensive solution to SIM card limitations. Get to know more about eSIM and iSIM here!

SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards have been fundamental in the development of mobile networks and have come a long way since then.

An eSIM is still a physical SIM, but instead of being removable, it’s soldered permanently into a device. Here's more information about iSIM and eSIM.

  • Smaller size: The eSIM is approximately half the size of a Nano SIM card and an iSIM is a fraction of a Nano SIM card.

  • Remote management: An eSIM is remotely programmable to manage profiles, change carriers, update settings, and modify permissions as preferred.

  • Durable: eSIM and iSIM cannot be easily broken or damaged since they're permanently embedded into the device.

  • Theft-proof: eSIM and iSIM cannot be stolen.

iSIM is built from the improvements offered by eSIM technology. While extending eSIM features, iSIM also eliminates some of eSIM’s drawbacks. The major change is that the iSIM technology could combine the device's processor and SIM card into one component. The space that would free up could allow for larger batteries, thinner phones, or even additional RAM capacity.

As we march toward a world of increasingly-connected people, iSIM technology will continue to support the growing market for IoT devices. And because of iSIM, a new IoT world is imaginable.
